So my therapist put me onto this episode on the Being Well podcast on ADHD featuring an interview with John J. Ratey, M.D. about the book he co-wrote with Edward M. Hallowell, M.D. titled ADHD 2.0 - New Science and Essential Strategies for Thriving with Distraction--from Childhood through Adulthood.
Here's what I found valuable in it, along with timestamps of when it was discussed.
02:20 - Common misconceptions about ADHD.
Some people, including some doctors, still don't believe in ADHD.
I feel like this is why it took so long for me to get a diagnosis. One of the things Dr Ratey mentions is that because some people don't believe in it these people might say things like "just buck up". I have totally experienced this throughout my life. For so long I felt that something wasn't quite right but I couldn't articulate it. People would just say stuff like "harden up" or "why can't you just do these things like the others". Well I couldn't! My brain doesn't work like the others.
